I recently got a chromebook and wanted to get into animating, I tried installing both the 32-bit and 64-bit files, but I don’t have an option to run open or anything, and I do have linux development enabled so if I could get some help that would be great
Is your Chromebook based on Intel chipset or Arm chipset? If your using Arm based hardware then there is no simple way to solve the problem.
If your running on Intel then you can either try installing Linux and then you can download Pencil2D and run it. It’s also possible to duel boot using a memory stick and install Pencil2D on the memory stick or memory card too!
There’s one confusion about the Chrome operating system, it’s a proprietary version on Linux, but it’s not fully compatible with other Linux distributions.
The bad news is that there is no official way of installing Pencil2D on ChromeOS because nobody on our team uses Chromebook or has one to test on. The good news is that once in a while we do here of users having figured out how to set up Pencil2D on their Chromebooks so it is possible.
You are on the right track, you will need to use the Linux VM (Crostini). Within the VM, you have three different installation options for Pencil2D: apt, AppImages, or flatpak. What you were downloading was likely the AppImages, but I recommend trying the Flatpak version first and only move on to other methods if that fails. First you need to setup Flatpak, which there is instructions for here. Then, run the command found on our Downloads page under “Other Ways to Install Pencil2D” > “Flatpak” > “Install”. After you’ve done this, Pencil2D will be available with all your other installed apps. This is actually a pretty good tutorial of the whole process for people unfamiliar with the command line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9UMBSTkLE0
Pencil2D does support both intel and arm chipsets for certain installation methods such as flatpaks so you should not need to worry about that.
