When I use bitmapped formats, to output images I generally use .png for stills and .gif for moving images.
I have never found any of the newer image formats offer anything that .png or .gif don’t offer. The files are sometimes slightly smaller, but not significantly.
You also run into problems, when it comes to using them on web pages. Not all if the newer formats are displayed on all browsers!
The same situation occurs when it comes to video formats.
