Adjust the size of the pictures

I want to change the size of my picture sequence, is it possible? I have two layers so I don’t know how to change the size of only one layer?

What format is your picture sequence?

Do you want to enlarge or reduce the picture size?

Or do you want to reduce the file size?

I have two layers. One is a movie, and the other is a sequence of png pictures. I want to adjust the size of the png layer in pencil2D in order to fit the background layer.

@Esme Hi, welcome to the forum. If you’re using the most recent version of Pencil2D (0.7.0), there is a way to change the position of all drawings in a single layer, but unfortunately not the size.

However I’ll suggest a possible workaround since you only have two layers.

  1. Make two hard copies of your Pencil2D project file. One is to use as backup in case something goes wrong, the other is to modify stuff. Make sure to use either File > Save As on your current file or use your operating system file explorer to Copy / Paste and create as many exact duplicates as you need.
  2. Once you have the new copies, rename one copy to add the _resize suffix e.g “MyAnimation_resize.pclx” and rename the other to have the _origin suffix e.g “MyAnimation_origin.pclx”
  3. Open the “_resize” version.
  4. Select the camera layer (actively click on the layer once)
  5. Pick the Move Tool (Arrow icon) and you’ll immediately notice the corners of the camera viewfinder will change. This tool will allow you to move, scale or rotate the camera.
  6. Transform the camera and scaling from the corners until your drawings are big enough.
  7. One you’re done, delete the layer you DON’T want resized.
  8. Go to File > Export > Image Sequence > Click on the [BROWSE] button and locate a folder to save the drawings you’re going to export. Give it a simple name without spaces otherwise the software will break. Use something like “resized_drawings_.png” I use underscore to mimic spaces.
  9. Then select the type of file (PNG)
  10. Make sure to turn the :white_check_mark: transparency checkbox
  11. Also turn on the :white_check_mark: Export keyframes only so you won’t get every single frame, but only the drawings you made (drawings = colored boxes / keyframes), frames = every image shown on video)
  12. Click OK
  13. Close the file and open the _origin file
  14. Go to File > Import > Image Predefined Set > Click on the [BROWSE] Button
  15. Locate the folder you exported the drawings on step 8
  16. Select a single drawing and press [Open] > The window whitespace should show you a list of drawings and frames where those drawings will be placed. If you did everything correctly all your drawings should now be imported on the same frame numbers as before.

This might look long but shouldn’t take you more than 3 minutes even when following the instructions. It’s a fast way to correct these kind of mistakes by only using Pencil2D.

Let us know if you need anything else.

Thank you so much! It is really difficult to find stop motion programs which support png files editing. I have tried Dragonframe and many others. Usually only video editing programs support background removal, but not for frames. I finally find Pencil2D, but I was hoping to adjust the size of my front layer. Problem solved. Thanks a lot.

Hi Esme

I hope that Jose explanation helps you.

But if you had specified the operating system that your computer uses and been more specific about the problems that you encountered.

Better still I you had shared a project file it would have been easier to help you.

I hope that the explanation from Jose helps you solve your problem and help you build your Pencil2D experience.

Jose is really helpful. I already solved problem. Thanks a lot.
