A few quality of life improvements

I have been using aseprite a lot lately to do some pixel art for game development and I just recently opened pencil2d for the first time in a while. I found myself missing some basic features that I had in pencil2d so I hope the devs will consider adding them.

  1. It would be extremely helpful to be able to merge layers
  2. I would like the option to see what frames have a key on a hidden layer. Currently, if the layer is hidden then it does not show what frames on that layer have a key.
  3. It would be nice to be able to show an onion skin for a selected layer. I normally will remember to draw my sketch layer in blue or green but I started sketching in black and it made it hard to ink the layer since my I was inking in black as well.
  4. I just thought of this last minute but it would be nice to have the ability to have multiple palettes in a project that way I could organize my colors into palettes for each character in a scene. It would also be great if we could save and load palettes into different scenes rather than having to remake the palettes every time we create a new project.

Thanks for the suggestions. We have a draft implementation of number one, though afaik its author is now longer actively working on Pencil2D and it’s not been updated in a long time. However, the saving and loading (but not grouping) of palettes is already possible. You can export the palette from your current project from the main menu via File → Export → Palette and then import it into another project via File → Import → Replace Palette… (or Append to Palette, if that’s what you need).

Thanks for the tip about palettes. That is extremely useful to know. Is there a way to have multiple palettes. I have multiple characters in my current scene and it would be helpful to not have to scroll through the single palette for all the saved colors for every character.

Unfortunately no. That’s what I meant by no grouping of palettes, though perhaps I worded that a bit oddly.
