In a situation where you accidentally overwrite a file, regardless of the type of file or the program, a backup made prior to your mistake is the only surefire recovery solution. Setting up a backup of your whole computer can be a bit involved, but it can really save you. For a simpler but less comprehensive solution, getting in the habit of saving copies of your work can work as a basic backup. For animations I usually make copies after each day’s work, or after finishing a certain amount of frames (and include the date or frames in the name of the copy to help keep it organized).
